Edward Timpson voices support for Relationship Alliance launch
By opo_webmaster, 11 November 2013 Strengthening relationships
I’m sorry I can’t be with you today, but I’m very pleased to lend my support to today’s launch and to the work of the Relationships Alliance.
Like you, I believe that strong and stable families are the backbone of a strong and stable society; the key to making sure children grow up in a loving environment and develop into healthy and fulfilled adults. And we know all to well the consequences for families, and children in particular, when that stability and strength is lacking. Which is why, this Government has been so keen to provide significant funding for the relationship support sector, which, of course, includes support for the Alliance.
It was great to have the opportunity to meet the Alliance’s chief executives earlier this year and to hear about their concerted efforts to build capacity and sustainability in the relationship support sector. I was also encouraged to learn more about the work they’ll be doing to highlight the importance of good relationships when it comes to the social and economic wellbeing of our country. Their commitment was crystal clear!
Yet relationship support is still all too often seen as something that couples only consider when they are close to, or at the point of separation. And it’s with this in mind that the Department for Education is funding a number of relationship support services with a real focus on preventative support, including services targeted at couples who are likely to face relationship stress or be at risk of relationship breakdown.
The Government has also commissioned research into the effectiveness of three key relationship support services; couple counselling, marriage preparation and classes for new parents. Early indications, from this work, builds on evidence that relationship support interventions can make a significant difference to the quality of relationships and the wellbeing of those in them. We’ll be able to share the report’s full findings later this year and hope you will help us disseminate these for use more widely.
So it only remains for me to wish you all well for today’s launch. I look forward to meeting and hearing from you again. Thanks.
Edward Timpson, MP
