July saw the publication of One Plus One's latest research entitled Informing unmarried parents about their legal rights at birth registration by R. Panades, R. Corney, C Ayles, J. Reynolds and F. Hovsepian. The project studies what unmarried parents know about their legal rights and examines the impact of providing legal information on knowledge and behaviour. The study shows that parents can engage with information about their rights if it is delivered in the right way and at the right time and that information given at birth registration does make a difference - only one third of the parents in the study believed that cohabitants had the same rights as married people; previous studies show 50-60% believing this. The publication of our report coincided with the release of the Law Commission's recommendations following extensive consultation on the law affecting cohabitants' property and finances on separation or death.   One Plus One's Practice Development team is currently working in partnership with pact (Prison Advice and Care Trust) to develop and pilot a two-day induction course for prison visitor centre staff. The first pilot will take place in London in September and will use the Brief Encounters® framework and skills to support staff to effectively engage with clients. The first day of the training will provide an introduction to visitor centres and training in the use a referral software package.

Director of One Plus One, Penny Mansfield, was quoted in The Guardian this month in an article by Decca Aitkenhead entitled Till death do us part. The article took a historical look at changing attitudes towards marriage. Penny was also quoted by Penny Wark in The Times in her article on remarriage; Second time lucky?
