One Plus One has published a new book for practitioners. Entitled Supporting Couple Relationships: A Sourcebook for Practitioners, the book brings together One Plus One's 35 years of research putting our experience in the hands of practitioners. The book considers current thinking on forming and being in a relationship, why relationships go wrong, and how they impact on children. The later sections guide readers through the skills for engaging with parents, based on One Plus One's successful Brief encounters® framework. A case study illustrates how to use the skills and tailor-made activities and is designed to help readers integrate the skills into their everyday practice.

Dr Shelia Shribman, National Clinical Director, Children, Young People and Maternity Services at the Department of Health wrote the foreword to the book endorsing One Plus One's work: "Practitioners delivering the CHPP do not need to be 'marriage guidance counsellors' but they do need to be psychologically minded and able to discuss relationship issues in families. This is skilled work and I am grateful for the contribution One Plus One has made to the confidence and skill of practitioners, in particular health visitors who have responsibility for the CHPP".   Dr Elizabeth van Acker from the Department of Politics and Public Policy at Griffith University, Australia, presented to staff and guests at One Plus One on the findings from her recently published book Governments and Marriage Education Policy: Perspectives from the UK, Australia and the US. The presentation compared marriage support policies in the UK, Australia and the United States. To view Dr van Acker's presentation click here.

One Plus One staff attended the Family and Parenting Institute's conference Parent Child 2008: Getting it Right for Families. Staff led two workshops during the conference which proved very popular. One Plus One's Practice Development and Training team also attended the CPHVA (Community Practitioners and Health Visitor's Association) conference in Harrogate where the launch of Supporting Couple Relationships: A Source book for Practitioners was very well received. At both conferences many delegates purchased a copy of the book along with our recently published monograph from the Edith Dominian Memorial Lecture, both of which are available to buy from the One Plus One website.

  About One Plus One

  One Plus One is a team of researchers, practitioners and information specialists whose aim is to enhance understanding of how family relationships contribute to the well being of adults and children through three key activities:

inquiring - monitoring and evaluating knowledge about relationships and effective support in order to develop key messages for policy and practice;
informing - creating imaginative formats for key messages tailored to different audiences, and raising awareness of the impact of couple relationships on the well being of individuals, families and communities;
innovating - developing innovative ways of getting specialist knowledge and skills about adult family relationships and early intervention to everyone working in the frontline with families, thereby adding value to existing practice.
