One Plus One held the biennial Edith Dominian Memorial Lecture at the newly refurbished Royal Institution this month. Professor Judy Dunn presented a lecture entitled Family relationships, children's perspectives. Professor Dunn is a Developmental Psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College London. She has authored, co-authored and edited an extensive series of books and papers and she is also the Chair of the Good Childhood Enquiry. The lecture was chaired by Yvonne Roberts, journalist and Senior Associate at the Young Foundation, and respondents were Anthony Douglas, Chief Executive of Cafcass and Professor Sarah Stewart-Brown from the University of Warwick. The lecture was followed by questions and answers from the audience. Over 300 guests attended including One Plus One trustees, policy makers, the media, researchers and academics as well as practitioners, front-line workers, and staff from family and relationship organisations. Professor Dunn's lecture looked at family relationships including parental relationships (step-parent / parent, non-resident parent / parent and others), sibling relationships and relationships with grandparents for mediating the effects of family breakdown. She presented longitudinal data from ALSPAC and the Pike Sibling Study along with children's drawings of their family relationships. Professor Dunn also used 'family maps' to assess children's relationships with their peers, family, and close relations. A monograph of the lecture has been produced and includes wonderful examples of children's drawings and 'family maps'. The monograph will be available to purchase from the One Plus One website shortly. |
