Local family offer: tackling parental conflict

Who we worked with

Our partners were Innovation Unit https://www.innovationunit.org and the Department for Work and Pensions https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-work-pensions

Short summary

Evidence shows that when children are exposed to conflict between their parents, it affects their emotional, social and physical wellbeing. Children may develop behavioural difficulties, become aggressive, and struggle in education. It can also impact their own relationships in later life.

We trained frontline practitioners such as family support workers, social workers and other teams at local authorities, to help the parents they work with tackle conflict.

What we achieved

The government understands the issues surrounding parental conflict and decided to tackle it as a key part of their plan to improve outcomes for children. The Department for Work and Pensions set out their vision in the paper ‘Improving Lives: Helping Workless Families’ in 2017. OnePlusOne was among the expert partners commissioned to establish the best way of embedding the vital knowledge about parental conflict into existing local services.  The Local Family Offer programme took place in twelve local authorities around the country and we are really proud of the results.
