Research shows that during the transition to parenthood couples experience an increase in stress that leads to a reduction in relationship satisfaction. As the first 1001 days of a child’s life is crucial for development, exposure to parental conflict can be particularly damaging in this time.
The transition to parenthood is also a time when couples are in contact with health professionals and offers a perfect opportunity for early intervention.
The project which has been funded by the Department for Work and Pensions set out to provide support to families as part of their ChallengeFund reducing parental conflict agenda.
The project has two elements:
(1) The development of an innovative digital solution for couples in the transition to parenthood hosted on the Baby Buddy app and ClickRelationships. This digital tool 'You and Your Partner' will contain a program based on Couple Coping Enhancement Training, Couple Care for Parents, and OnePlusOne’s How to Argue Better training. This evidence-based approach will use a mix of psycho education and behaviour change theory (including BehaviouralModelling Training) to help couples manage their expectations about the transition to parenthood, help develop vital communication and conflict resolution skills, and support couples to manage their stresses.
(2) A training course delivered in three areas to Family SupportWorkers. Practitioners will learn about the critical link between the transition to parenthood and relationship conflict. Practitioners will be trained to discuss relationships using the You and Your Partner digital tool.Following training, practitioners will support the families they engage with to work through the tool as part of their practice
The project will be delivered through a partnership between the charities OnePlusOne and Best Beginnings from April 2019 to March 2020.
This project is ongoing so please watch this space to see how we get on.
